Backscatter & ARA

Calibrated Beam Backscatter analysis provides critical insight into seafloor composition by measuring the intensity of acoustic returns from multibeam sonar. Variations in backscatter strength help differentiate between sediment types such as sand, mud, gravel, and hard bottom, adding material context to bathymetric data. When paired with ARA sediment classification, these acoustic patterns are processed into consistent, repeatable substrate maps that support habitat mapping, engineering design, and environmental assessments. This information helps us understand bottom conditions for anchoring, trenching, dredging, and construction suitability. Together, backscatter and ARA classification transform depth data into a clearer picture of what the seafloor is actually made of.
